Human Rights @ De Krook: Cartooning and democracy in times of crisis

Deze paneldiscussie onderzoekt hoe politieke cartoons kritisch omgaan met en interveniëren in ons politieke en democratische leven, met name in relatie tot nationale en mondiale crisissen.

Deze avond brengt de ervaringen en perspectieven samen van de Oegandese politiek activist en kunstenaar Jimmy Spire Ssentongo, de Belgische cartoonist 'Lectrr', conflictonderzoeker Sara Weschler (Universiteit Gent) en journalist Gie Goris (MO* - moderator). Samen reflecteren zij op hoe cartoons onze manier van denken over politiek, onderwijs en democratie kunnen beïnvloeden, zowel als creatief platform als kracht die het publieke debat vormgeeft.

Dit evenement wordt mede georganiseerd door INSPIRA (Institutional, Socio-economic and Political Issues in Rural-urban Areas), de Conflict Research Group, het Afrika Platform van de Universiteit Gent, Bibliotheek De Krook en Avansa Regio Gent.

Panelleden

• Gie Goris is journalist, ontwikkelingseducator en auteur. Hij was hoofdredacteur van MO*, een kwartaalblad dat zich richt op mondiale vraagstukken. Hij is de auteur van Opstandland: De strijd om Afghanistan, Pakistan en Kasjmir, een breed opgezet verslag van conflicten in Zuid- en Centraal-Azië. Daarnaast stelde hij boeken samen over religie en geweld, en over kunst, culturele diversiteit en globalisering. Goris deed verslag vanuit 77 landen en interviewde een breed scala aan mensen, van schrijvers en denkers tot politici en boeren.
• Lectrr is huiscartoonist voor De Standaard en publiceert regelmatig in Le Monde, L’Internazionale en NRC. Hij is een activist voor de rechten van cartoonisten en werkt samen met Cartoonist Rights en Cartooning for Peace.
• Jimmy Spire Ssentongo is een Oegandese academicus, columnist, portrettist, auteur en autodidactisch cartoonist. Hij werkt sinds 2006 voor de krant The Observer (Oeganda). Hij heeft een doctoraat in de filosofie en was Associate Decaan van de Faculteit Letteren en Sociale Wetenschappen aan de Uganda Martyrs University. In 2020 publiceerde hij de cartoonbundel Uncomfortable Laughter. In 2024 werd hij door de Amerikaanse minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Antony Blinken geëerd tijdens de 2024 Anti-Corruption Champions Awards voor zijn werk in het blootleggen van corruptie en het bepleiten van mensenrechten in Oeganda.
• Sara Weschler (Conflict Research Group, Universiteit Gent) is een onderzoeker die zich focust op landconflicten in Noord-Oeganda. Zij woont en werkt in Oeganda en is daar sinds 2007 betrokken bij tal van initiatieven op het gebied van sociale rechtvaardigheid en mensenrechten.

This panel discussion explores how political cartooning critically engages with and intervenes in our political and democratic life, particularly in relation to national and global crises.

This evening brings together the experiences and perspectives of Ugandan political critic and artist Jimmy Spire Ssentongo, Belgian cartoonist 'Lectrr', conflict researcher Sara Weschler (Ghent University), and journalist Gie Goris (MO* - facilitator). Together, they reflect on how cartoons can influence the way we think about politics, education, and democracy, both as a creative platform and as a force that shapes public debate.

The panel discussion will take place in English.

Speakers:

• Gie Goris is a journalist, development educator, and author. He was editor of MO*, a quarterly magazine focused on global issues. He is the author of Opstandland: De strijd om Afghanistan, Pakistan en Kasjmir, a wide-ranging account of conflicts in South and Central Asia. He has also edited books on religion and violence, as well as on art, cultural diversity, and globalization. Goris has reported from 77 countries and conducted interviews with a wide range of writers, thinkers, politicians, and farmers alike.
• Lectrr is an editorial cartoonist for De Standaard, and publishes regularly in Le Monde, L’Internazionale and NRC. He’s a cartoonists rights activist working with Cartoonist Rights and Cartooning for Peace.
• Jimmy Spire Ssentongo, is a Ugandan academic, columnist, portraitist, author and self-taught cartoonist. He has worked for The Observer newspaper (Uganda) since 2006. He holds a doctorate in philosophy and, has served as Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Uganda Martyrs University. He also published a collection of his cartoons entitled Uncomfortable Laughter in 2020. In 2024 he was honored by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken at the 2024 Anti-Corruption Champions Awards for his work exposing corruption and advocating for rights in Uganda.
• Sara Weschler (Conflict Research Group, Ghent University) is a researcher focused on land conflict in northern Uganda. She has lived and worked in Uganda and has been involved with numerous social justice and human rights initiatives there, since 2007.
